House Lannister

House Lannister

Lore

“Lannister always pays their debts” – this should be one of the most frequent phrases that you might have heard during the Game of Thrones TV series, almost each and every episode. Indeed, Lannisters always paid their debts and not only. All in all, this is one of the most powerful and rich families in all 7 kingdoms.

Lannisters definitely was not shown as the perfect family and perfect characters. On the opposite, everything which could be incorrect and could have been odd would necessarily be presented in this family. Yet, on the other hand, Lannisters came out to be one of the most powerful and strong characters. This can be partially justified by the Lion logo of the kingdom and the red color, which always dominates during the presence of any Lannister.

The background

House Lannister is and has always been one of the greatest and powerful houses in Westeros. The lands of Lannisters are the far west of the kingdom. The family seats in Casterly Rock, which is a castle on a rocky promontory overlooking the sunset and the sea. The Casterly Rock also overlooks the gold mines in the Westerlands.

The House Lannister was always the wealthiest realm and this is due to the amount of gold and money the family was able to manage and dig through the centuries. They once also passed the Valyrian steel sword, which was called Brightroar, which belonged to King Tommen II Lannister, yet was lost soon after.

Valyrian steel was the only metal, which could actually kill the white walkers and was capable of harming the dragons. This was a very rare and very precious item, which also belonged to Lannisters and they were proud of it.

House Lannister sigle

Not only do we know Lannisters for their money, but for their vibrant and definitely flamboyant characters. The fair-haired, handsome, beautiful and very elegant characters were all from Lannister clam. This is due to the historic descendants of the family and the generations of not mixing the true and the fair blood with any other. The modern Lannisters are from the blood of Andal adventurers who carved out a mighty kingdom in the western hills and valleys. Yet, from the female line of the family, there is Lann the Clever, the legendary trickster from the Age of Heroes, who was able to turn down previous rulers of Casterly Rock and give it a modern look.

The last king Lannister, who used to rule the Kingdom was Loren Lannister, he and Mern Gardener, settled the army for the battle against Aegon the Conqueror, who was of the Targaryen family. The battle was irreversible and there was no real chance of winning, as on Aegon’s side there were a lot of men as well as dragons. Thus, in this battle Lannisters and their ar,y lost 4,000 people, and ever since they served the Targaryen family, while still remaining one of the strongest and the most influential families and rulers of the Seven Kingdom.

Tywin Lannister who was the first known leader of the Lannister family to us is the son of Tytos Lannister. He frittered away much of their fortune on poor investments and allowed himself to be mocked at court creating a perception of weakness. Their vassals House Reyne of Castamere rebelled against Lord Tytos. Tywin put down the rebellion personally, extinguishing their house and re-establishing the fearsome reputation of House Lannister. His ruthlessness gave darker meaning to the common phrase “A Lannister always pays his debts” and was immortalized in the song “The Rains of Castamere”.

The modern family

Tywin had three children. Jamie, Cersei, and Tyrion Lannisters. Cersei and Jamie are fraternal twins, while Tyrion is a dwarf. Tywin’s late wife, Jianna Lannister died while giving birth to Tyrion, and thus Tyrion is not on the best terms with his father as well as with sister and the brother.

This is not all, Jamie and Cersei have been in love with each other for all their life, but definitely could not express and publicize it. Thus, they always were in a secret relationship and have three children together, who are Joffrey, Tommern, and Myrcella. While no one knows about this secret bond, whoever gets to know, dies immediately or badly injured.

On the other hand, Tywin arranged the marriage of Queen Cersei and Robert Baratheon, who was the King of Westeros, and thus soon after Robert’s death, the Lannisters, particularly, Tywin and Cersei were able to get back the iron throne, which basically belonged to them from the very first moment of establishing the Casterly Rock. Cersei married Robert in exchange for the support of Robert’s Rebellion and thus, apparently while the agreement was definitely right for the kingdom, it was very much wrong for Baratheon and the whole kingdom.

Jamie and Cersei had three children, whom Cersei would show off Robert’s children, but in reality, were the product of incest and were basterds. Joffrey who became the king, was one of the most blood-seeking and unpredictable kings of Westeros, while Tommen was one of the best and the kindest Lannisters to be known to the audience, together with Myrcella. And you shall be surprised that both of them are dead.

It’s all about power

While Tywin was far from being the best father, or the ruler, one thing he knew for sure, which was the strategic movement of the figures and drinking wine. The strategic movement of the figures helped him out in marrying his wife to Baratheon while drinking wine definitely came at hand while killing Rob Stark, who was the official ruler of The North.

Cersei is one of the strongest women characters, and generally one of the strongest characters of the whole series, while Jamie is one of the bravest and the most loyal characters of the series. There is one more who killed his father, and thus is called the King murderer, and also is the dwarf, Tyrion Lannister, who actually turned to be one of the most clever and strategic characters of the GOT.

The whole Lannister family is a big mess, as you most probably won’t be able to find at least one good thing in total for all of the family members but everything can pretty much be justified through their power and the wealth, or the power of the wealth.

While Cersei, Jamie, and Tyrion definitely make it until the very last episode, Tyrion is the only Lannister left alive from his family. Jamie and Cersei get killed in the Battle of King’s Landing and thus, Tyrion is the only one remaining, who also is the Hand of the Queen Dayneris and becomes the Hand of King Bran after her death.

The development of the Lannister storyline is definitely more interesting than you may have imagined in the beginning, but one is for sure. The Lion is the King of the animal Kingdom, and the Lannisters shall remain the rulers of the Westeros Kingdom. And Lannistors not only paid all of the debts but also paid for all of the sins.

Lannister always pay their debts, and always ask for the landed, you can never escape and never cheat, one of the strongest and wealthiest houses of Westeros
